What it does
A surge device sits at the panel and shunts voltage above a set level to ground. It reacts in a fraction of a millisecond, so a spike from the street is knocked down before it reaches your circuits.
That covers things a power strip never does. The oven board, the air conditioner, the dishwasher, the garage opener and anything hard wired.
Where surges come from
Lightning is the famous one and the rarest here. Most of the damage is from switching on the utility side, from the pole transformer feeding your street, and from large motors in your own home starting and stopping.
Those small hits do not kill an appliance at once. They shorten its life, which is why the failure never looks like a surge when it finally happens.
