Spark Services Outlet and Switch Repair

Outlet and Switch Repair in California

Dead outlets, warm switch plates, and old two prong receptacles.

Most outlet and switch calls are 150 to 400 dollars and the fix is often one loose connection in a nearby box.

The short version

  • A whole wall of dead outlets usually means one failed device upstream.
  • A warm plate or a scorch mark is a stop using it problem.
  • Two prong outlets can be made safe without opening walls.
  • Kitchens, baths, garages and outdoor spots need protected outlets.

Why outlets die in groups

Outlets on a circuit are wired one to the next. When the connection inside one box fails, everything downstream of it goes dead while the breaker stays on. That is why a whole wall quits at once.

Before calling anyone, press the reset button on every protected outlet in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage, laundry and outside walls. One tripped device often explains several dead outlets in another room.

Backstabbed connections

Many outlets are wired by pushing the wire into a hole in the back instead of wrapping it around the screw. The push in connection holds by a small spring, and after decades of heating and cooling it loosens.

A loose connection arcs, and arcing makes heat. This is the single most common cause of dead outlets and burned device faces in tract housing.

What to do about two prong outlets

A two prong outlet has no ground, so surge protectors and many electronics are not really protected. There are three fixes. Run a proper ground, which means opening walls. Replace the first outlet on the circuit with a protected one and label the rest. Or rewire the circuit.

The middle option is allowed by code, it is cheap, and it makes the outlets safe for people. It does not create a ground, so the label matters.

Questions people ask

Why does my outlet feel warm
Stop using it and call. Warmth at a plate means a loose or overloaded connection that is making heat.
Can I replace an outlet myself
Many people do. Test that the power is truly off, and know that a two prong box has no ground for the new device.
My outlet works but my tester says wrong wiring
Reversed hot and neutral is common in older homes and is a quick fix. An open ground needs the conversation above.
