Rough in and finish

Rough in is everything before the walls close. Boxes, cable, panel work and the inspection that has to pass before insulation goes in. Finish is devices, fixtures, plates and the final inspection.

Rough in is on the critical path of the whole project. When it slips, drywall slips, and every trade after it slips too.

Why kitchens take so much

Current rules ask for two dedicated circuits for the counter outlets, a separate one for the dishwasher, one for the disposal, one for the microwave and one for the refrigerator, plus protected outlets everywhere near water and an arc fault requirement through most of the home.

An old kitchen often runs on two circuits total. That gap is why a kitchen remodel so often finds the panel out of room.

Decide before the wire goes in

Walk the space with the electrician and mark everything on the studs. Outlet heights, switch locations, where the island lands, which way a door swings, where the television goes and which lights are on which switch.

Moving a mark before wire is pulled is free. Moving a box after drywall is a patch, a paint and an argument.
