A ceiling fan install is usually 200 to 500 dollars, and the part that matters is the box in the ceiling, not the fan.

The short version

A standard light box is not rated to hold a moving fan.

The box is the job

A fan hangs weight and shakes while it runs. The plastic box that holds a light fixture is not built for that. A fan needs a box marked for fan support, fixed to framing or to a brace made for the purpose.

An expanding brace slides through the hole left by the old box, spans the joists and locks in place. That is how a fan goes into a finished ceiling without cutting it open.

Wobble and noise

Wobble comes from a loose mount, a bent blade holder or blades that do not weigh the same. Tightening the mount and running the balance kit that came in the box fixes almost every case.

A hum at low speed usually means the wrong control on the wall. Most fans need a control made for fans, and a common light dimmer will make one buzz and can damage it.

Controlling light and fan separately

To run the fan and its light from two switches you need an extra wire between the switch and the ceiling. Older homes often have only one. Rather than opening the wall, most electricians fit a remote or a smart control that splits the two over the existing wire.
