Wire Size, Amps and Why It Matters
The short version
- 14 gauge wire takes a 15 amp breaker. 12 gauge takes 20.

The pairing you cannot break
Fourteen gauge copper goes with a 15 amp breaker. Twelve gauge goes with 20 amps. Ten gauge goes with 30. Eight gauge goes with 40 and six gauge with 55 or so, depending on the type of cable and how it runs.
Putting a 20 amp breaker on 14 gauge wire means the wire can get hot enough to damage its insulation before the breaker ever notices. It is invisible, it is inside the wall, and it is the shortcut that starts fires.
Why the numbers run backward
Wire gauge counts down as the wire gets thicker. Fourteen is thinner than twelve, which is thinner than ten. It comes from how wire was made, drawn through a die again and again, and each pass raised the number.
The practical version is simple. Smaller number means more metal and more amps.
Distance changes the answer
Voltage drops as it travels down a wire. On a short run inside a house it does not matter. On a long run to a detached garage or out to a well pump, it matters a lot, and a motor fed low voltage runs hot and dies early.
The working rule is to keep the drop under three percent on a branch circuit. Past about a hundred feet most runs get bumped up one wire size to make that work.
Things that make wire run hotter
Several circuits bundled together in one conduit. A wire crossing a hot attic in an Antelope Valley summer. Insulation packed over cable. All three reduce how much current a wire can carry safely, and the code has tables for each.
This is one of the reasons the same wire is rated differently on different jobs, and why a load calculation is not just adding numbers up.
